Pairing stone with timber
Timber and natural stone are a timeless combination. The warmth of oak, walnut or darker stained timber can soften cooler white and grey stones, while lighter timbers can enhance the calm, organic quality of warmer quartzites and soft-toned dolomites.
For a balanced look, consider the undertones in both materials. A warm stone often pairs best with warm timber, while crisp white marble can create a beautiful contrast against darker joinery.
Pairing stone with metal finishes
Metal finishes can either quietly support the stone or make its character feel stronger. Brushed nickel and chrome create a clean, contemporary finish, while brushed brass adds warmth and works especially well with creamy, beige and golden stone tones.
Black details can create definition around lighter materials, particularly in modern kitchens. The key is to let the stone remain the focal point rather than competing with too many strong finishes.
Choosing joinery colours
Joinery should complement the movement within the slab. A highly veined marble or quartzite often works best with simpler cabinetry, allowing the stone to become the statement.
For quieter stones, deeper timber tones, coloured joinery or textured finishes can add another layer of interest. Soft greys, warm whites, olive greens and natural timber are all versatile choices that sit beautifully alongside natural stone.
Let the slab lead the design
Every slab has its own colour variation and movement. Rather than trying to match every finish exactly, use the stone as a starting point and pull subtle tones from within it.
Viewing the slab alongside joinery samples, tile samples and metal finishes is one of the best ways to create a cohesive result. It allows you to see how everything works together in real light before final decisions are made.
